FTG at EISS sport and business event - January 2011
The English Institute of Sport Sheffield (EISS) was the venue for a conference and break out meetings on Sport and Business opportunities relating to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Danny Stones, MD of Full Time Group (FTG) and Rachel Scott, Sports Funding and Project Development at FTG, both attended the event at one of the UK’s most impressive indoor sports facilities.
Delegates learnt about the key role Sheffield is playing in the lead up to the Games and the city’s commitment to increase participation in sport and physical activity, whilst developing the numbers of coaches and volunteers. The city is also the proud home to a number of GB teams, National Governing Bodies (NGBs) and many elite athletes, including Jessica Ennis, the current World and European Heptathlon Champion and World Indoor Pentathlon Champion.
Speakers on the day included Ben Brailsford, Sheffield 2012 Delivery Manager for the City Council, and representatives from GB Diving, GB Volleyball, English Table Tennis Association, the Chamber of Commerce and Yorkshire Gold Business Club.
Danny Stones commented ‘This was the perfect opportunity to hear from and network with some of the leading sport and business figures, National Governing Bodies and teams here in our own home city. The conference perfectly complimented the existing work Full Time Group is carrying out for a variety of our clients to increase participation levels in sport and physical activity.’
Rachel Scott added ‘The topics we covered on the day included London 2012 national and regional opportunities, developing participation and communication in sport, legacy goals, Sport England and other commercial funding issues. We had very useful meetings with top people from a number of NGBs and all added to FTG’s strength in positioning our existing clients at the very centre of the current sporting opportunities.’
Ben Brailsford from the City Council confirmed that a recent Sport England survey shows Sheffield as the number one for active people out of larger UK cities. Sheffield is also the venue for International Training Camps for Olympic teams from USA, Brazil and Serbia with ongoing discussions with Canada, China and a number of Eastern European countries.
During a session on winning performance and when asked about the pressure of competing in particularly your home Olympic Games, diver Ben Swain replied ‘You must control the controllables and prepare for every scenario. Do not waste a single training session, know you have done everything possible, enjoy the journey and be able to stand on the board at the start of the Games knowing that you can say that I have done everything in my power to be the best I can.’
Familiar and inspiring words echoing the work of Rob Copeland, Sport and Exercise Scientist Psychology, and colleagues from the team at the Centre for Sport and Exercise Science who have worked with Ben and GB Diving for many years and who help deliver our FTG specialist programmes.
